While the swashbuckling Zorro may be almost as unfamiliar to young audiences today as the Lone Ranger was three years ago, there have been 42 movies made about the latter-day Robin Hood — and there’s about to be one more.
Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Babel, Mozart in the Jungle) will be donning the mask and cape in Z, a reboot vehicle for the character.
This actually isn’t the first time Bernal has been cast as the hero. Four years ago, he was attached to star in Zorro Reborn, which would have trasnplanted the character into a post-apocalyptic future. That picture never got past the script stage.
No information has been given yet as to whether Z is the new title for the stagnated Zorro Reborn or an entirely separate picture about the character.
Z will be directed by Jonás Cuarón, co-writer of Gravity and writer-director of last year’s Desierto.
