Independence Day: Resurgence‘s aliens may be a formidable force, but they’re no match for an animated fish.
After setting a record for an animated film with a $135-million opening last weekend, Finding Dory earned an estimated $23-million yesterday, putting it on pace for a second-weekend haul of an estimated $75-million, putting it in such fine company are The Dark Knight, Avatar, and Captain America: Civil War.
Independence Day: Resurgence, meanwhile, pulled in an estimated $17-million Friday. Combined with surprisingly atrocious reviews — check back later today for my slightly more positive take on the sequel — it’s unlikely the twenty-years-later sequel will pull in more than $45-million by Sunday’s end.
Other new releases The Shallows and Free State of Jones took in an estimated $7-million and $3-million, on their way to estimated openings of $17-million and $8-million, respectively.
