Just as Corner Gas is to Canadians and Friday Night Lights to Americans, there’s a national love in England of the boozy Britcom Absolutely Fabulous. That patriotic popularity boosted the long-awaited Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie to the biggest U.K. opening weekend for a British movie since Spectre.
Across 615 British screens, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie earned £4-million ($5.4-million U.S.) over the weekend. It’s continued earning another $1-million or so every weekday since.
The film adaptation of the long-running series sees fashion-minded lushes Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) accidentally killing Kate Moss and going on the run.
The comedy may have been just what British moviegoers needed to comfort them and get their mind off of the turmoil of a post-Brexit world.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie opens in Canada and the U.S. on July 22.
