Ever since Collateral Beauty was announced last year, it’s plot has been kept under tight wraps.

A month ago, star Will Smith told Entertainment Weekly, “It was one of those [times] where you get a screenplay and you are in by page 10.” Beyond that, though, he wouldn’t go into details about the plot, which he said would “be tough to promote.”

This morning, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Collateral Beauty, finally spilling the beans on the central mystery of the hopeful holiday movie.

After the death of his daughter, Howard (Will Smith) withdraws into himself and copes with his loss by writing letters to the concepts of Death, Time, and Love.

In the style of holiday classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, Howard it then visiting by the physical embodiments of Love, Death, and Time — played by Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Jacob Latimore, respectively.

More mysteries still wait to be revealed, like whether Howard’s friends (played by Edward Norton, Michael Pena, and Kate Winslet) can see the concepts or whether it all looks in Howard’s head.

Audiences will have to wait until December 16 for the rest of Collateral Beauty‘s questions to be answered. Watch the trailer below.
