For the second year in a row, I didn’t see 25 movies worthy of inclusion on my best-of-the-year list. Moreover, there are even fewer on this year’s list than last.

With just a few hours until the winners begin being announced, we’re fast approaching the deadline for people’s Oscar bets. Need some last-minute help? Here are my predictions of the movies that’ll be bringing home the gold tonight, ranked in order of their wins’ likelihood.

This morning at the crack of dawn, a half-dozen of Hollywood’s elite will announce to the world the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards. What movies can you expect to see up for the treasured trophies this year? It’s a less contentious year than most, but expect to hear a few of the same names many times over.

At the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, Jimmy Fallon described Manchester by the Sea as “the only thing from 2016 that was more depressing than 2016.”
Certainly, the fact it’s centered around no fewer than four deaths makes its position as one of the frontrunners for the Best Picture Oscar in a year so packed with notable deaths rather fitting.
With an unflinching stare of despair and pain, Manchester by the Sea is a gruelling movie. It’s also a great one.
